Compared to the hustle and bustle in Vladivostok, the seaside here was eerily quiet at night. The blazing bonfire had unconsciously become the focus of their sight. Sitting by the bonfire, eating hot food and drinking hot soup, they could feel a trace of warmth in the cold night wind.
Yuri whispered something, but Zhang Xiaoqiang didn't understand. He thought that Yuri wanted a cigarette, so he took it out and threw it to him. Unexpectedly, Yuri didn't smoke and politely refused. Then he gestured to Zhang Xiaoqiang that he was drinking. Zhang Xiaoqiang looked at this young drunkard in confusion, spread his arms and shrugged, indicating that he didn't have any.
Yuri didn't ask for a drink from Zhang Xiaoqiang, but asked Zhang Xiaoqiang to let him drink. They were on a mission now, and according to the rules, they couldn't drink. He didn't know if Zhang Xiaoqiang knew about this rule, so he was just testing him. Unexpectedly, Zhang Xiaoqiang didn't object, so he took out vodka from his bag, smiled at Zhang Xiaoqiang, and poured it into his mouth.
Zhang Xiaoqiang really didn't care whether Yuri drank or not. He only cared if Yuri would fly the plane after drinking. After Yuri drank, he felt something was wrong. He saw Yuri put the bottle into his mouth and drank all the vodka in one breath without stopping. When Yuri put down the bottle, he burped, smiled at Zhang Xiaoqiang again, and turned over and fell to the ground.
"What … what the hell.
What's the big deal? "
Zhang Xiaoqiang looked at Yuri on the ground and said gloomily, grabbing his hair. He remembered that he had scared Yuri twice today. Did he create unimaginable psychological pressure on Yuri?
The night was quiet. Although Yuri didn't speak the same language as him, at least they could breathe. He didn't expect things to turn out like this. Zhang Xiaoqiang was a little helpless, so he could only sit by the fire and keep watch.
In the latter half of the night, the air became colder. Zhang Xiaoqiang kept adding wood to the bonfire to make it burn more vigorously.
The bright bonfire could be seen from far away. It was like a beacon in the dark, guiding the creatures in the dark. Zhang Xiaoqiang did not know that he had inadvertently attracted an unexpected guest.
Zhang Xiaoqiang, who was sitting next to the fire, nodded his head and dozed off. Even so, Zhang Xiaoqiang was still holding the loaded rifle in his hand. The reason why Zhang Xiaoqiang could sleep so boldly was because he was confident in himself. Just as he nodded his head more and more, Zhang Xiaoqiang suddenly stopped. He opened his eyes and looked around at the darkness around him. He picked up a few thick pieces of firewood and threw them into the fire. He sat on the ground and moved his butt to a more comfortable position to continue his nap.
A small figure crawled towards the fire. That thing was not big, about the size of a poodle. It was not very agile, at least when it was crawling on the beach.
Yuri was in a mess. Zhang Xiaoqiang sat cross-legged on the side and dozed off. In front of the fire was a pile of dry wood that was half the height of a person. Every piece of wood was of the same size and was piled up into a pyramid. Beside the wood was Zhang Xiaoqiang and Yuri's dining table. All kinds of leftovers and uneaten food were randomly placed together. There was even an empty wine bottle.
That poodle sized thing revealed its figure under the light of the fire. It was actually a huge insect. This insect had thick armor and six thick legs. On its front abdomen, there were two pincers in the air. However, this pincer looked very strange. It did not look like a pincer and only had three equally long forked appendages. It looked like a mechanical hand before the apocalypse.
This thing stopped in front of the fire and crawled towards Zhang Xiaoqiang. It looked very careful, even to the point of being wretched. Every few meters, it would stop and use its fist-sized head to look at Zhang Xiaoqiang. The rifle in Zhang Xiaoqiang's hand was the focus of its gaze.
When it reached the wood, the creature changed its direction again and crawled towards the food. Its two robotic pincers picked up an empty can. The creature was also strange. It grabbed the can and shook it. Its small head shook regretfully. Then, it grabbed another can. This can was only half-eaten.
With a swoosh, the beetle's back shell opened, revealing its transparent wings. The wings and the carapace formed a guardrail, isolating a container that could hold things.
Zhang Xiaoqiang lowered his head and squinted his eyes to carefully look at this strange beetle. He was amazed in his heart. He had never seen such a smart insect. It was almost like a spirit. The beetle moved very quickly. It almost collected all the food that they had not eaten. Its wings were getting higher and higher, and finally formed two baffles. Together with its raised tail, it kept all the food. Then, it turned around with difficulty and crawled back to where it came from.
Seeing that thing crawling back, Zhang Xiaoqiang's finger released from the trigger. He changed his mind and pulled Yuri over. He made him sit cross-legged on the ground and replaced his position. Then, he quietly went into the darkness.
The beetle was not affected by the light. It crawled towards the darkness in the distance at a constant speed. Zhang Xiaoqiang followed the beetle closely through the night vision device on his helmet. One beetle carried one person, gradually moving further and further away.
The space on the back of the beetle was limited. As it kept crawling, there were always some scattered biscuits, cans, and seasonings falling down. It didn't pick them up even if they fell down. It continued to crawl with the rest of the things. Zhang Xiaoqiang picked them up from behind.
The place where they landed was not in the urban area. They specifically chose a remote place. Because there were no buildings within ten kilometers nearby, it was a dense forest. Zhang Xiaoqiang and the beetle walked through the forest.
The beetle was very familiar with this area. When it crawled, it could always find a smooth and convenient path. Although the path was winding, it didn't have to worry about being tripped by dense vegetation.
Zhang Xiaoqiang followed it closely. When they walked to the vicinity of a low hill, he saw the beetle crawling straight towards the hill. Zhang Xiaoqiang was delighted. Finally, he found the nest of the beetle.
Up until now, Zhang Xiao Qiang hadn't barbecued the worm. This was because he had taken a liking to it. It was so intelligent that he was very interested in raising one. He had come here to see if there were any newly born worms.
Suddenly, a row of low bushes was suddenly put down. Two black shadows rushed out from behind the bushes and rushed towards the beetle. The beetle was scared and stayed where it was and didn't dare to move.
The bright white light illuminated the black shadows and the insects clearly. Two soft cries could be heard, as a pair of seven or eight year old children sat on the ground with their hands covering their eyes. The insects were still motionless, as though they were dead. Zhang Xiao Qiang walked forward and looked at the two children who were wearing clothes made from leaves. He curiously sized up the cave behind them.
Under the light of the flashlight, the cave was full of shadows. He didn't know what was inside. Zhang Xiaoqiang aimed the flashlight at the two children again. He found that they were a boy and a girl. They were both kneeling on the ground with their foreheads touching the ground. They seemed to be begging for forgiveness from Zhang Xiaoqiang.
"Pa … …"
Zhang Xiaoqiang threw the food in his hand in front of the two children. Looking at the two children, Zhang Xiaoqiang bypassed them and went into the cave. Not long after, he pulled out an adult.
It was a woman. Her whole body was swollen and her steps were weak. If it wasn't for Zhang Xiaoqiang's sharp eyes, he would have thought that it was a fat person. The woman had long hair that covered most of her face. He almost mistook her for Sadako.
The woman clasped her hands together and whispered in Korean to Zhang Xiao Qiang. Her tone was pleading. Zhang Xiao Qiang shook his head helplessly and turned to leave. Suddenly, he thought of something and went back into the cave. Not long after, he came out with a palm-sized, wriggling beetle.
This beetle was hiding in the innermost corner. Zhang Xiaoqiang almost missed it. Zhang Xiaoqiang was about to leave after getting the beetle. He didn't expect that the big beetle would suddenly throw away the food on its body and jump towards Zhang Xiaoqiang.
"Tong … …"
The beetle that had just jumped was kicked back by Zhang Xiaoqiang. It fell on the ground and struggled violently. The two children cried and rushed to the side of the beetle. They turned it around. The beetle seemed to be very angry and struggled towards Zhang Xiaoqiang.
Zhang Xiaoqiang looked at the beetle in his hand and smiled in satisfaction. He didn't look at the three survivors anymore. He turned around and walked towards the beach, leaving the woman to persuade him in a low voice.
